4.  AUSTRALIANS ARE UNDERWEIGHT IN FIXED INTEREST SECURITIES

Statistically, Australian investors devote a much smaller percentage of their portfolios to fixed interest securities than investors in the US. The possible reasons for this are:
  • Historically, fixed interest securities have been difficult for individual investors to buy in Australia, often requiring a very large minimum investment.
  • Investors do not understand fixed interest securities as well as shares.
  • Many believe that equities will generate a greater return than bonds, but in the long term, the reduced risk that bonds provide can make them an important asset class.
